Price: $219.95

Industrial and agricultural work involves the use of many different chemicals that can run-off into water and pollute it.

  • Metals and solvents from industrial work can pollute rivers and lakes. These are poisonous to many forms of aquatic life and may slow their development, make them infertile or even result in death.
  • Pesticides are used in farming to control weeds, insects and fungi. Run-offs of these pesticides can cause water pollution and poison aquatic life. Subsequently, birds, humans and other animals may be poisoned if they eat infected fish.
  • Petroleum is another form of chemical pollutant that usually contaminates water through oil spills when a ship ruptures. Oil spills usually have only a localised affect on wildlife but can spread for miles. The oil can cause the death of many fish and stick to the feathers of seabirds causing them to lose the ability to fly.

Getting to know more about Water Softener

What is Water Softener?

A water softener is a special type of “filter” that removes calcium, manganese, iron, and magnesium in hard water by using plastic beads through a process called Ion Exchange. Water Softener cleans itself periodically by a process called “regeneration.”

In the ion exchange process, a bed of resin serves as an exchange medium where water flows through it to replace hardness ions, calcium and magnesium with sodium ions.

To explain further, Ion molecules carry either positive or negative charges while on the other hand, cations carry positive charge and anions are of negative charge. Since sodium has a much weaker charge than calcium, magnesium and iron, it therefore allows the ion exchange.

When the resin has reached its capacity for holding hardness ions, the water softener initiates a regeneration cycle. During this cycle, a sodium chloride “brine” solution flows through the resin and effectively reverses the process by exchanging sodium ions for hardness ions, and flushing the hardness ions down the drain. The regeneration process usually happens in the middle of the night when your family is asleep and nobody needs to use any water but this can be set manually as well.

There are three main components that a water softener has: A mineral tank, brine tank, and control valve.

Mineral Tank: The mineral tank is basically where all of the vital action takes place. It is where the plastic beads are used for the ion exchange process. This is where the hard water is softened through water filtration (calcium and magnesium are removed).

These beads are often made of polystyrene and may also be called resin beads. The plastic beads have a negative charge and attract the calcium and magnesium minerals from the water which have a positive charge. Since opposites attract, electricity does the work for us and the hard water minerals are removed from the water and deposited on the plastic beads. The water is softened.

Brine Tank: The brine tank is where a highly concentrated solution of salt or potassium is stored.

The brine tank is a plastic tank that contains the brine — water saturated with salt.

Control Valve: The control valve is the device that controls the flow of water into and out of the mineral and brine tanks during regeneration.

It acts as a traffic cop in your water softener system. It determines when it is time to clean those plastic beads which are now coated with calcium and magnesium. Older style units use a timer, newer models use a computer controlled meter that determines when it is time-based on actual water usage.

Smaller capacity models combine the mineral tank and brine tanks into one cabinet, but the two tanks are still separated within the cabinet. Larger flow capacity systems have a separate stand-alone mineral and brine tanks.

Hard Water vs. Soft Water

When rainwater falls, it is naturally soft, but as water travels its way through the ground and eventually to our waterways, it mixes with minerals.

Water will then be considered “hard” when they contain minerals. Minerals like calcium and magnesium are the most common minerals that can be found in water. Since groundwater dissolves rock like limestone, sometimes metals like iron, these minerals get mixed with water and travel along with it to your home.

These minerals (more like solids) causes buildups on your pipes (resulting in clogged and corroded plumbing), appliances and eventually to your body.

Effects of Hard Water

• On Drinking Water

While hard water is not considered to be dangerous to one’s health, the minerals found in hard water causes its taste to be slightly bitter compared to soft water which tastes a lot sweeter and softer.

• Impact on hair and skin

Studies show that hard water can cause an increase in eczema in children. This is because the minerals in hard water can dry out the skin and hair and can be very noticeable by its dull and sticky effect on the hair and skin.

Hard water has also been found out to cause perms and dyes to fade faster and may be one of the reasons for having a flaky scalp and hair breakage.

• On Household

Hard water leaves spots and films on appliances, dishes, bathtubs, shower heads, and glassware. The buildups it makes causes formation of scales that cause clogging and also impairs the flow of heat in water appliances eventually leading to overheating.

The Benefits Of Having a Water Softener

Water becomes hard when it contains a high level of calcium and magnesium, it constitutes several problems throughout your home that you may or may not have noticed.

Hard water causes buildups inside your pipes causing it to clog, complicate soap & detergent, and leaves spots. The buildups also develop in your water appliances reducing its efficiency, which leads to more energy consumption.

Here are some of the benefits when hard water is treated with a water softener:

• Healthcare

Healthcare is one of the most important benefits of having a water softener. Studies show that drinking hard water can increase the risks of cardiovascular diseases and high blood pressure. And nobody wants that.

Softened water makes skin softer and cleaner and also smoothens hair. Protecting your family from health issues caused by hard water is one of the most important benefits of getting a Water Softener.

• Appliance Life Span

Hard Water can cause limescale build-ups in your pipes as well as eventually affecting your appliance life span. You surely don’t want this to happen and as such, you’ll need a Water Softening system to protect your appliances and devices that use water at home.

• Energy Saving

Related to the above, when your appliance senses these build-ups, it produces more heat causing you more energy consumption. When your appliances are efficiently operating, excessive energy is less likely used.

• Reduction of stains

Hard water leaves stains and spots to everything it touches. Your softened water makes silverware, glassware, mirrors, tiles, cars, or any plumbing fixtures cleaner and shinier.

• Lesser Detergent inefficiencies

When water is softened, your soaps and detergent will be more effective as you can easily create lather. Hard water leaves stain on clothes and surfaces. Creating lather using hard water is not as efficient as in soft water, thus you’ll consume more detergent and more water.

• Better Flavor of Water

As water is softened, the hard minerals are reduced and or removed resulting in better-tasting water. This happens when water softener replaces salts with salts of Sodium through the exchange process.

Types of Water Softener

There are typically five different types of water softener systems:

– Salt-Free System
– Salt Based System
– Ion Exchange System
– Reverse Osmosis System
– Magnetic System

Salt-Free System

Salt-free water softeners typically use a filter so chemicals, potassium or salt is no longer required therefore leaving the minerals in the water as it is.

Salt-free systems also reduce scale buildups. Its main benefit is the ability to soften water without having to add sodium to the water which is a more healthy and environment-friendly way. It is also maintenance free and uses no wastewater, electricity or chemicals.

This type of system’s media can also last up to five years without replacing thus making it a really low maintenance system.

Salt-less systems just basically go by its name. “Salt-free”. Because of such, excessive sodium intake can be avoided therefore providing safe water for the entire family. This is why this type of water softener is mostly preferred by consumers since users can have a peace of mind knowing that the water they’re using and/or drinking are free of sodium and chemicals. This also aids in lesser wastewater and consumed energy.

Salt Based System

Salt-based water softening system is heavy duty systems that greatly removes hard water. The downside of this is that it comes with some more maintenance since it requires salt to be replenished on a monthly basis (some up to 6 months).

Health concerns are also one of its downsides. Traditional salt-based systems add salt to the water which can have a negative effect on people with high blood pressure and heart disease, so it is mostly recommended to homeowners with extremely hard water levels only.

Ion Exchange System

This type is not recommended for drinking water as it contains high sodium levels. With this water softener type, the ions in the water are exchanged with sodium or potassium ions which helps in prolonging the life of washing machines and dishwashers.

Reverse Osmosis System

Reverse Osmosis softeners use pressure to remove impurities through a semipermeable membrane. In this process, the contaminants and dissolved minerals from the water are removed.

Magnetic Softeners System

From the name itself, magnetic softeners use magnets to alter the water. Magnets are placed in or around the water pipes to create a magnetic field. However, 48 hours after the water leaves the magnetic field, it returns to a hard stage.

Installation and Maintenance

Water softening system installation is more or less the same in most cases. Knowing how to install your system does a lot of help especially when it comes to cost. It is also good when it comes to maintenance so you’d know what exactly to do.

Where to Install a Water Softener

• Location

It is suggested to install your water softener in an area where it is accessible to your plumbing system. Ideally, this could be in the basement, garage, or utility room, often near the water heater. Make sure you allow some space around it for easy maintenance and service when needed.

You should also avoid placing it in areas where it might freeze which can cause permanent damage and of course void your warranty. Avoiding it from direct sunlight is also highly suggested.

• Hookups

Your water softener system will require a drain such as a utility sink or floor drain for its regeneration. It also has to be near an electrical receptacle (not controlled by a switch) that can handle the needed amperage.

• Pipe Connections

If you are softening your entire home’s water supply (which is mostly the case), you will need to position your softener before the water heater. Doing so helps reduce the buildup in the water heater as well.

If you are using a salt-based softener, chances are, sodium in your drinking water might cause health risks. If so, it is highly advised to bypass certain faucets that are used for drinking water. One good example is your kitchen sink.

Another option is to get a salt-free water softening system. An important note, make sure you do not place your softener after (downstream from) the water heater—temperatures above 110 degrees F (43 degrees C) may damage the softener and void the warranty.

How to Install a Water Softener

1. Clear and sweep the area. The INLET should be attached to the water supply pipe and the OUTLET should go toward the water heater

2. Shut the house water supply valves off. Turn off the water heater supply as well as the power to the water heater then drain the water from the pipes.

3. Cut into the water supply line. Hard water from the water supply will run into the softener’s inlet, and soft water will run out to supply the house’s fixtures and faucets.

Cut into the water supply line using a cutter and install an elbow fitting so you can run two lines to the outlet and inlet ports of the bypass valve.

4. Cut and install the pipes that lead to the bypass valve. Solder all the fittings and nipples before attaching them to the plastic bypass valve.

5. Clamp the drain hose to the softener, and run it to a drain or utility sink.

6. Connect the brine tank’s overflow tube. Make sure you follow the manufacturer instruction.

7. Set the bypass valve to the “bypass” position and turn on the water to run through the softener for a few minutes to flush out sediment and expel air in the pipes.

8. Set the valve to the “Backwash” position after plugging the unit into a nearby receptacle. Press and hold the regenerate button until the valve advances to Backwash.

9. Partially open the inlet control on the bypass valve to slowly. You’re doing this to release any build-up of air. Once the water flows steadily, fully open the inlet and outlet bypass controls.

10. Fill the tank with water and salt as directed by the manufacturer.

11. Plug in the power cord. Press the regenerate button again and allow the unit to cycle to its next stage and repeat until the service setting is reached.

12. Program the controls.

Maintenance

Water softening systems mostly requires very little maintenance but it’s still recommended to check it regularly to ensure the unit’s efficiency.

• Refill Salt Regularly
• Select the best Kind of Salt to Use
• Check for Salt Bridges Regularly
• Clean the Resin Bed and Brine Tank Regularly

Tips in Choosing Your Water Softener

Do You Need a Water Softener?

Before you decide what softener to buy, it is beneficial to consider if you need one or not. Determining the degree of the hardness of your water should be the first thing you should do. Knowing your water hardness level and the implications thereof will also help you against sales pitches that could offer inaccurate information to sell you unnecessary and expensive equipment. Nobody likes extra expenditures!

You would not want to buy something expensive and high-performing like a dual tank if your water hardness level is not too much.

1. Determine the size you need

Determining the size of your Water Softener helps you decide the best product to choose. You then have to take into consideration the purpose or usage of the product. A lot of water softeners are built for household purposes and if you are looking for a household Water Softener, take into consideration the size of your family and property.

If the area around your intake pipes is too small, then you cannot go with a huge water softener.

If you have a family of two to three, a small to midsize water softener will be adequate. If you have four or more people at home, you will need mid to large sized.

Be sure to check the dimension of the water softener and see if it will fit inside the space that you have intended for it.

2. Compare Prices

As with most things in life, the quality of the water softening system increases along with its price. An efficient water system can cost anywhere up to $1000 while cheaper systems can be bought at a much lower price but naturally offer lower standards of performance. Doing your homework and finding your household a system that suits both your clean water needs and budget is well worth it.

You can get quotations from customer service or sales over the phone or via email. Don’t forget to ask about taxes and surcharges as well.

Make sure you also ask about warranties, installation and maintenance (if needed in the future). Some softeners require professional installation and might cost you more than the product itself. Always ask about DIY installation as this can save you more bucks that a pro-installed one.

3. Compare Features

Gather the features of the Water Softener you’re trying to get. Here are vital features to take note of when choosing your Water Softener:

• Capacity

One important feature to consider when choosing your water softener system is its capacity. The capacity of a water softener is simply the amount of hardness it can remove before it needs to regenerate. And finding out how much water consumption on average is used for the household is as important as determining the hardness level of your water.

You also have to take note that the larger the capacity of the water softener system, the less frequently the softener will need to regenerate.

Water softener capacity ranges from 16,000 to 100,000 depending on the tanks the system has. Most dual-tank softeners have as much as 100,000+ capacity.

• Regeneration

Regeneration is the process by which your water softener gets rid of the hard particles that gets coated to its resin bed over time. This is when the salt in the tank is mixed with incoming water. Once done, the unit is once again ready to provide soft water to the household.

Remember to consider whether the water system unit you plan on buying is timer regenerated, meter regenerated or manually regenerated. Timer-based water softeners are usually the cheapest but often requires more salt for its regeneration process.

Depending on the system of the unit, regeneration is either done automatically or manually on a timer. It is important to take note of this feature and it is highly suggested that you get an automatic system as it offers the greatest flexibility and ensures the best use of the media inside the tank.

• Bypass Valve

A bypass valve is another important feature to take note of as this allows water to bypass the actual softener. This is quite useful when you do not need softened water (like filling your pool).

You also have to make sure that the bypass valve on your chosen unit is user-friendly and easy to operate.

• Ease of Use

This is where Maintenance and Installation come in. When choosing your unit, be sure to inquire about its installation and maintenance needs. You might want to make sure that this can be done by yourself as both might cost you more money than the unit’s value itself.

4. Do Your Own Research

Of course, all companies would tell you they have the best product (who wouldn’t?), so it is wise to do your research about your choices. Pay attention to legit customer reviews, complaints, add-ons that might be needed.

Conclusion:

Overall, the best Water Softener for you relies entirely on your preference and purpose or usage. Others prefer quality over price and some price over quality. Regardless of what your buying preferences are, it is always good to have a good research about the product first.

First, set aside what matters most to you. If you are more on the quality, expect to pay more. Second, search for the preference you’ve chosen. Third, pick top 3 products and compare. It is also very helpful to read reviews of course.

Whatever buying preference you have, we sure wish you’d find the one you’re looking for!
