A water softener is a special type of “filter” that removes calcium, manganese, iron, and magnesium in hard water by using plastic beads through a process called Ion Exchange. Water Softener cleans itself periodically by a process called “regeneration.”

In the ion exchange process, a bed of resin serves as an exchange medium where water flows through it to replace hardness ions, calcium and magnesium with sodium ions.

To explain further, Ion molecules carry either positive or negative charges while on the other hand, cations carry positive charge and anions are of negative charge. Since sodium has a much weaker charge than calcium, magnesium and iron, it therefore allows the ion exchange.

When the resin has reached its capacity for holding hardness ions, the water softener initiates a regeneration cycle. During this cycle, a sodium chloride “brine” solution flows through the resin and effectively reverses the process by exchanging sodium ions for hardness ions, and flushing the hardness ions down the drain. The regeneration process usually happens in the middle of the night when your family is asleep and nobody needs to use any water but this can be set manually as well.

There are three main components that a water softener has: A mineral tank, brine tank, and control valve.

Mineral Tank: The mineral tank is basically where all of the vital action takes place. It is where the plastic beads are used for the ion exchange process. This is where the hard water is softened through water filtration (calcium and magnesium are removed).

These beads are often made of polystyrene and may also be called resin beads. The plastic beads have a negative charge and attract the calcium and magnesium minerals from the water which have a positive charge. Since opposites attract, electricity does the work for us and the hard water minerals are removed from the water and deposited on the plastic beads. The water is softened.

Brine Tank: The brine tank is where a highly concentrated solution of salt or potassium is stored.

The brine tank is a plastic tank that contains the brine — water saturated with salt.

Control Valve: The control valve is the device that controls the flow of water into and out of the mineral and brine tanks during regeneration.

It acts as a traffic cop in your water softener system. It determines when it is time to clean those plastic beads which are now coated with calcium and magnesium. Older style units use a timer, newer models use a computer controlled meter that determines when it is time-based on actual water usage.

Smaller capacity models combine the mineral tank and brine tanks into one cabinet, but the two tanks are still separated within the cabinet. Larger flow capacity systems have a separate stand-alone mineral and brine tanks.

Hard Water vs. Soft Water

When rainwater falls, it is naturally soft, but as water travels its way through the ground and eventually to our waterways, it mixes with minerals.

Water will then be considered “hard” when they contain minerals. Minerals like calcium and magnesium are the most common minerals that can be found in water. Since groundwater dissolves rock like limestone, sometimes metals like iron, these minerals get mixed with water and travel along with it to your home.

5. Clamp the drain hose to the softener, and run it to a drain or utility sink.

6. Connect the brine tank’s overflow tube. Make sure you follow the manufacturer instruction.

7. Set the bypass valve to the “bypass” position and turn on the water to run through the softener for a few minutes to flush out sediment and expel air in the pipes.

8. Set the valve to the “Backwash” position after plugging the unit into a nearby receptacle. Press and hold the regenerate button until the valve advances to Backwash.

9. Partially open the inlet control on the bypass valve to slowly. You’re doing this to release any build-up of air. Once the water flows steadily, fully open the inlet and outlet bypass controls.

10. Fill the tank with water and salt as directed by the manufacturer.

11. Plug in the power cord. Press the regenerate button again and allow the unit to cycle to its next stage and repeat until the service setting is reached.

12. Program the controls.
